The CRCA Level 1 course aim is to provide the theory and skills for a day long sea kayaking trip in sheltered waters.

So we will look at equipment for a day-trip, and this is a guide line as you will soon make your own list and buy yourself more and more gear, some of us just can’t help it!

We will talk about all of this and more in detail during the course.

EQUIPMENT

  • Approved Personal Flotation Device (PFD)
  • Whistle attached to PFD
  • Light (for navigation)
  • Hand pump
  • Throw bag (15 meters)
  • Spare paddle
  • Paddle float
  • Spray skirt
  • VHF radio and cell phone

ACCESSORIES

  • Chart in waterproof cover
  • Double of your float plan
  • Sunglasses
  • Sunscreen
  • Water and flood
  • Thermarest: great first aid item and when you load your kayak you can put your thermarest in the cockpit and blow air in so your gear will be secured in place
  • Knife
  • Dry-bag

FIRST AID KIT

  • You’ll have to make your own
  • Make sure you know how to use everything you carry
  • Verify expiry dates every spring
  • Carry extra of your own medication

EMERGENCY KIT

  • Tarp
  • 3 lighters
  • Can saw
  • Distress flares
  • Flash light
  • Emergency food & water
  • Spare batteries & candles
  • Sewing kit

REPAIR KIT FOR KAYAK

  • Kayak repair kit for quick kayak repairs
  • Duck tape (doesn’t hurt to have a lot of duct tape… ever)

SECOND SET OF CLOTHES

  • From head to toe, since it’s for emergency, make sure it’s warm and include a toque, gloves, turtle neck, etc.
